Travel Insurance

Last updated: August 2026

Travel insurance is not compulsory, but we highly recommend comprehensive cover for every journey to Bhutan.

Why travel insurance matters

Bhutan is a remarkable destination, but its mountain landscapes, altitude, and remote areas mean that travel carries some inherent considerations. Comprehensive travel insurance helps protect you and your investment if something unexpected happens before or during your trip.

What we recommend your policy covers

Medical emergencies & evacuation

Including cover for high-altitude or remote-area evacuation, which is important in Bhutan.

Cancellation & interruption

So you can recover non-refundable costs if your trip is cancelled or cut short for a covered reason.

Baggage & belongings

Cover for lost, delayed or damaged luggage and personal items.

Activity & trekking cover

Ensure your policy covers the activities and trekking included in your itinerary.

Important notes

  • AUNZ to Bhutan does not provide travel insurance. You are responsible for arranging your own cover.
  • Check that your policy specifically covers Bhutan and any trekking or altitude-related activities in your itinerary.
  • Carry a copy of your insurance details with you and share the emergency assistance number with us before departure so we can assist if needed.
  • Review policy wording carefully, including any exclusions, before purchasing.

Medical evacuation

Medical evacuation from remote or high-altitude areas in Bhutan can be costly. We strongly recommend confirming that your policy includes emergency medical evacuation, including from high-altitude locations.
